The Recycle for Cornwall campaign has been developed to raise public awareness of recycling and to provide consumers with a compelling reason to recycle.
Household Waste digesters work on similar principals to a home compost bin; breaking down organic waste through a unit placed in the garden. Unlike a compost bin, digesters do not produce an end product and are recommended for kitchen waste rather than garden waste.
Digesters are specifically designed to get very hot, breaking down the materials within the unit at a faster rate and producing water, carbon dioxide and a tiny amount of residual. When using a compost bin you need to balance the materials which you put in to ensure the compost you create is of good and usable quality. However with a digester you do not have to consider this and so should not be putting in “brown” materials like straw or sawdust.
The specific design of a digester allows you to recycle all kitchen waste including cooked foods, dairy, meat, fish and bones. It can even break down moderate amounts of animal excrement.
A digester is a very low maintenance method of reducing your waste, all you need to do is place the digester in a sunny spot with good drainage and empty it of any built up residue every few years.
A popular example of a household digester is the Green Cone which comprises of a basket which is dug into the ground and inner and outer cones which are placed on top.
