The Recycle for Cornwall campaign has been developed to raise public awareness of recycling and to provide consumers with a compelling reason to recycle.
You may have heard of probiotic yoghurts but now we can introduce you to Probiotic composting or EM (Efficient Microbes) composting. Probiotic composting is being promoted as an extremely effective way of dealing with kitchen waste. All kitchen waste including meat, fish, bones and plate scrapings are added to a small air tight container to which is added a bran substance which contains natural microbes. These microbes cause the materials in the container to ferment rather than degrade which produces abundant amounts of nutrients and antioxidants which revitalise soil.
The unit, once filled should be closed up and left for two weeks for the process to take place. Every couple of days you will need to drain off, a nutrient rich liquid which can be used diluted as plant feed or poured down drains to prevent algae build up or odours. The natural microbes not only add beneficial nutrients to the fermenting material but also speed up the process and eliminate any smells, allowing the unit to be kept safely in the kitchen.
After two weeks the contents of the unit can be added to a normal compost bin or dug into the ground where it will benefit soil and plants. It is recommended that you use two kitchen compost units in rotation as once one unit is full it can’t be used until the 2 week fermentation period is completed.
