  What Is Landfill?

Landfill sites are big holes in the ground where we bury rubbish.

There are big problems with burying this waste.

Lots of the rubbish that we throw away will stay in the ground for a very long time.

Plastic bottles and bags can take over 500 years to rot down and glass bottles and jars can take 1000’s of years!

Gases are produced by some waste items when they rot down. These are bad for the environment and can be explosive, such as methane.

Rotting rubbish also produces liquids called leachates that can seep into our water supply if they are not very carefully monitored.
