Subject: Investigating the changing composition of waste over time.

Learning Objective: To investigate the impact of our changing lifestyles on waste and it's disposal.

Resources: Teachers Notes and Pupils Worksheet to show changes in composition of waste over time.
Pictures to represent 1930's packaging and present day packaging.
Examples of types of packaging used in 1930’s and present day.

Introduction: Look at the different types of waste to explore changes in bin composition over time.

Main Activity:
Examine the different types of packaging used in a household kitchen in the 1930's compared with 2006.
What makes up most of the waste?
Compare bin from 1930's with today’s waste bin. Discuss packaging, refillable bottles etc.
What do we throw away more of?
What do we throw away less of?
What is totally new?
What impact does our use of packaging have on today’s environment?

Learning Outcome/Extention: Children could write a story about how people lived in the 1930’s.
