The Recycle for Cornwall campaign has been developed to raise public awareness of recycling and to provide consumers with a compelling reason to recycle.
Subject: Litter pick to find out how much litter is thrown away in the school grounds, or other local area. (health and safety considerations).
Learning Objective: To find out how much waste is thrown away and how this could be reduced, reused and recycled.
Resources: Litter pickers, bin liners, scales, gloves.
Introduction: Children in small groups will collect litter from different areas of the school grounds. Students will weigh the amount of rubbish collected from the litter pick. The different types of litter should be recorded by type on a tally chart. Each group will present what they find to the class.
Main Activity: As a whole class the students will discuss the following: What is litter? Who makes litter? What different types of litter are found? What types of places do we find litter (ask examples from local environment)? What problems does litter cause? What effect does the wind have on litter?
