The Recycle for Cornwall campaign has been developed to raise public awareness of recycling and to provide consumers with a compelling reason to recycle.
Learning Objective: To find out the importance of recycling and waste reduction.
Resources: A variety of different types of waste including paper, cardboard, shoes, plastic bottles, teabags, glass, paper plate, carrier bag, old toy, old book, piece of clothing, vegetable/fruit peelings. This could have been collected from the school or classroom over a short period of time.
Introduction: Discuss the meaning of the 3R's: Reduce, Reuse and Recycle. Include composting as a method of recycling.
Main Activity: In groups of 4-6, pupils should unpack a bin liner full of clean rubbish and categorise the contents. Ask children to use the worksheet to decide whether each item can be reused or recycled. Ask what we have to throw away. How much can be reused or recycled or both, how much do we have to throw away?
Which items do the children think they could start to keep out of the bin just by changing their habits slightly? Which items would they still throw away? Are there any items that we could reduce? How does the decision to reduce, reuse and recycle affect the environment?

Learning Outcome Children will present their findings to the class. They could produce posters to encourage others to reduce re-use and recycle.
