The Recycle for Cornwall campaign has been developed to raise public awareness of recycling and to provide consumers with a compelling reason to recycle.
Few people think of it this way but through recycling from home we are all contributing to putting back resources into the manufacturing industry, which reduces the impact that industry will have on the environment.
Recycled materials in the U.K are fast becoming some of the most sought after resources in the marketplace and using these resources reduces the impact on supplies of raw materials. For example recycling 1kg of aluminium saves 8 kg of Bauxite and 4 kg of Chemicals (Source). By recycling our paper we are contributing to not just saving forests but also the wildlife and eco systems that are affected by our heavy reliance on them.
It is estimated that the average family in the UK spends around £434 per week; this is split between transport, recreation, food, housing, clothing, communication, alcohol & tobacco, education and health. But how much of what you buy at the shops is made from recycled goods? You can’t always tell of course. It is more than likely that the newspaper you read this morning is made up of at least 70% recycled paper stock, and your loo roll just might be recycled paper too! Your baked bean cans could be made from recycled steel and when you go out of Cornwall across the Tamar bridge, look closely at the kerbstones as these are made from recycled plastic bottles.
As well inadvertently buying recycled materials in every day items, you could make a concerted effort to buy recycled, this is known as ‘closing the loop’. Recycling is a cyclical process, or a loop; recycling an item is often the easy part, but to complete the loop we as consumers need to increase the market for recycled materials by buying recycled products. This way we ensure that the recycling we dutifully collect is put to good use once it has been processed.
So, when buying toilet paper, look for the brand that advertises that it is recycled; similarly if you are buying bin bags, find the recycled variety. If you know that it is possible to buy a recycled product like paper or envelopes and the shop you usually use doesn’t stock it, let them know and buy the product elsewhere. Your consumer pound does have power!
From kitchen wear to kids’ toys there is a wealth of products available for the shoppers who want to stay ahead of the game, and because many of these items are not mass produced you can add some pretty unique features to your home or garden, which will leave you the envy of all your friends. There are too many to list here but we do hope to develop a list of suppliers on this site soon.
It’s not just the individuals who can do their bit either. Businesses are increasingly setting themselves a wide range of internal goals and targets. Organisations who present themselves as caring about the environment appeal to an ever-increasing spread of the consumer market.
Practising what we preach.
If you have ever seen a Recycle for Cornwall poster, leaflet, bookmark or magnet you will know that these items have all be produced, using the knowledge and guidance of Leap Media, from recycled materials using the methods of production which have the least impact on our environment.
