The Recycle for Cornwall campaign has been developed to raise public awareness of recycling and to provide consumers with a compelling reason to recycle.
Cornwall is a fantastic place to live especially in the summer and what could be better on a warm summer’s day than to visit the beach or the countryside with a packed lunch or a picnic and enjoy our stunning natural environment.
Unfortunately picnic lunches can generate a lot of rubbish but it’s really easy to make sure that your lunch on the go is as waste-free as possible.
Firstly, think about what you use to carry your picnic in, what you eat it on and drink it out of! It makes both environmental and economic sense to use cutlery and crockery that you can use again. Avoid throwaway plates, cutlery and cups and invest in some that can be reused, you can get some great colorful plastic cups and cutlery these days, they are often very cheap so will save you money in the long run and will not create waste. Picnic sets and hampers are easily available and are back in fashion; there are loads to choose - from traditional hampers to funky backpacks.
Secondly think about the food you are taking with you. If you know you are going to be having a picnic or packed lunch when you are out, plan ahead and prepare all your food at home first, the food will be tastier; it will save you money and waste will be minimal especially if you choose reusable plastic tubs rather than wrapping everything in foil or clingfilm. If you have to buy food when you are out try to avoid over packaged goods as much as you can, pick up some fruit and vegetables from a local market or grocer. These too will be waste free and often cheaper than your supermarket.
Waste from fruit and veg can also be composted when you get home. For your drinks take a refillable drinks bottle or flask instead of cartons. If you have to buy a drink when you are out try to choose a recyclable container like glass bottles or cans rather than cartons. Cans are great as you can crush them so they take up less space when you take them home.
And finally, at the end of the day don't forget to take your rubbish and your recycling home!
