The Recycle for Cornwall campaign has been developed to raise public awareness of recycling and to provide consumers with a compelling reason to recycle.
‘You are what you eat’ or so the saying goes. Well if that’s true then you are what you clean with too! Eye, nose, and throat irritation; headaches, loss of coordination and nausea are just a few adverse reactions that people are known to have had after being exposed to numerous household chemicals we use to ‘clean’ our homes everyday.
In 2005, Researchers from the University of Bristol published a report based on 7,000 children and their prenatal exposure to household cleaning products such as disinfectant, bleach and air fresheners. Their findings suggested that those who had been exposed to high levels of domestic chemical-based products while in the womb were more than twice as likely to have wheezed throughout their life as those with low levels of exposure to similar chemicals.
Although the industry is strictly regulated, as a consumer you have the right to choose how you want to clean your home. There are effective and safe alternative products available combining new innovative ideas on how to clean to the old tried and tested methods that your Gran would have used. Not only do alternative cleaning solutions often cost less they reduce the number of chemicals you are exposing your family to and can often help allergy sufferers.
Below are just a few examples of everyday items that you can use to clean your home effectively without compromising your health. There is more information available through our Article Links.
BAKING SODA (sodium bicarbonate): is an all-purpose, non-toxic cleaner. It cleans, deodorizes, removes stains and softens fabrics. CORNSTARCH can be used to starch clothes, absorbing oil and grease. HERBS and ESSENTIAL OILS make effective air fresheners and LEMON JUICE cuts through grease and removes perspiration and other stains from clothing.
Both SALT (sodium chloride) and TOOTHPASTE can act as abrasive. VINEGAR (acetic acid) cuts grease, removes stains and is an excellent water softener and WASHING SODA (sodium carbonate): Cleans clothes, softens water, cuts grease and disinfects. If you think all of this is just too much then why not try switching to a more environmentally friendly band of cleaner. (Take a look at the links to the right of the page)
Many of today’s modern cleaning solutions also cause an increase in waste; disposable surface wipes, floor wipes and now even toilet wipes all add to the waste we throw away or flush down the toilet. Washable cloths, dusters and toilet brushes are still as effective as they have always been and save you money.
You can also buy microfibre cloths that are so effective they eliminate the need for cleaning products. Don’t forget that you can also recycle any plastic bottles that have contained household products from cleaning sprays to bleach as long as they are empty.
