In the House - Junk Mail

Is your postman so laden down with mail everyday that even if he wanted to run away from next door’s over enthusiastic guard dog he wouldn’t stand the chance?

Now ask yourself, is this because you are very popular, or could it be because over the years your name and address has made its way on to so many mailing lists just because you missed that vital tick box on an insurance quote or loan application!

We are not saying all unexpected mail is bad, and sometimes that perfect gift for your mother in law will be found in a catalogue sent by company x who got your name from company y. Many UK charities use direct mail to generate much needed awareness and funds for their causes.

However by registering with the Mailing Preference Service (MPS) you can exercise your right to choose the mail you want and can remove your contact details from up to 95% of UK mailing lists. The MPS is a free service set up 20 years ago and funded by the direct mail industry. MPS will update their records for Direct Mail companies to see and adjust their lists as you request, so not only will you save yourself hassle but you will go a considerable way to saving paper resources (not to mention your postman’s back!).

If you are receiving mailings from companies you have dealt with in the past but are no longer interested in you may need to contact them direct and asked to be taken off their mailing list. Companies would rather not waste their resources on customers who are not interested in their products and services so you will be doing them a favour too!

Read the small print! If you are giving your details to a company check what they will do with this information, many companies can now assure you that your contact details will not be passed on to outside parties but don’t assume this!

The Royal Mail's Door to Door Service delivers unaddressed mail labeled “to the householder” or “to the Occupier” with your normal post. If you do not wish to receive this mail you will need to write to Royal mail and opt out :Royal Mail Door to Door Opt-Out, Room 130, Wheatstone House, Wheatstone Road, Swindon, SN3 5JW or call 08457 950 950.

Franked stamps for charities

Before you recycle or reuse the envelopes from your remaining mail, don’t forget to check to see if there is a stamp which could help out a charity. Guide Dogs for the Blind claim that one kilo of stamps could raise enough funds to feed two guide dog puppies for a day... just imagine that!

If you want to help support a local charity, stamps can be donated to the Cornwall Wildlife Trust.

Guide Dogs for the Blind also accept franked postage stamps to raise much needed funds.

If you are a charity who collect stamps please get in touch, and we can help spread the word.
