The Recycle for Cornwall campaign has been developed to raise public awareness of recycling and to provide consumers with a compelling reason to recycle.
The availability of clean and safe running water is something that most of us take for granted. However increasing populations, industrialization, pollution and privitisation all put pressures on this valuable resource.
With forecasters predicting more extremes of weather, an increasing local population and Cornwall being an ever more popular tourist destination, it is important for Cornish residents and businesses to be as water efficient as possible.
The amount of water we consume has increased dramatically since the 1970's when the average water consumption was 110 litres (24 gallons) per person per day. Today we use around 157 litres (34 gallons) per person per day.
Having daily showers instead of baths could save up to 300 litres of water a week, not to mention the saving on your water bill.
South West Water can offer advice about a free ‘save a flush’ or ‘hippo’ device which can be fitted to your toilet to reduce the amazing amount of water we simply flush down the loo; accounting for one third of our domestic water consumption in the UK!
How much water falls on your roof?
Harvesting the vast amounts of rainwater that falls onto your roof through using a water butt can provide year round nourishment for your garden or water to wash the car. South West Water can provide water butts at very reasonable prices.
You could also start home composting, which not only reduces your waste but also helps to conserve water. Using compost on your garden improves the water retention of your soil and so reduces the need for excessive watering. More information on composting.
