The Recycle for Cornwall campaign has been developed to raise public awareness of recycling and to provide consumers with a compelling reason to recycle.
One of the reasons that recycling is so important is that it cuts down the amount of energy used to make new products. Now one form of recycling will also help to reduce the carbon emissions produced by our cars.
Waste cooking oil can be recycled to create an alternate, renewable fuel for vehicles called Bio diesel. This, not only prevents cooking oil from being disposed of at landfill but the fuel produced is also significantly better for the environment than fossil fuels.
Measurements of the emissions of greenhouse gasses from bio diesel, are 55% lower than fossil fuels. These measurements are of ”life cycle emissions” which not only take in to account direct emissions from vehicles but also those associated, such as extraction, production, transport, etc. In addition Bio diesel has less toxicity, better biodegradability and a higher flash point than fossil fuels making it ideal to use in sensitive environments.
The fuel can be used pure or as a blend of 95% mineral fuel and 5% bio diesel. The bio diesel blend can be used in all diesel cars without any modification being necessary and actually improves the properties of the fuel by improving lubrication and fuel economy.
The pure form of bio diesel can be used in some diesel models, but you should always check you cars warranty details.
The bio diesel blend can be transported and sold in exactly the same way as current fuels sold and so is available at some forecourts across the county. As with pure biodiesel, the blend has also proven to be more environmentally friendly through lower carbon emissions and will also help to extend the reserves of the unrenewable fossil fuel.
