The Recycle for Cornwall campaign has been developed to raise public awareness of recycling and to provide consumers with a compelling reason to recycle.
Sustainable transport is a phrase which was coined in the late 20th century to describe all forms of transport which minimise emissions of carbon dioxide and pollutants. Sustainable transport can mean anything from public transport such as trains and buses; car sharing, walking and cycling to technology such as electric and hybrid cars or using bio diesel.
Transport currently produces around 25% of global carbon dioxide so it really is time to stop and think about the forms of transport we use. Changing the way we travel by using means of sustainable transport will dramatically improve our lives for the future and lead to clearer roads, cleaner air and a healthier environment, improved personal wellbeing and better quality of life.
The National Travel Survey found that around a quarter of all car trips made in 2002/03 in Britain were less than 2 miles in length! As more Cornish residents own cars our roads are getting more and more congested and our air is getting more polluted.
If you only have to make a journey of a couple of miles why not leave you car at home and walk or cycle instead? There will not only be huge benefits to the environment but also to your health. According to the Car Free London Exhibition regular cycling will give you a fitness level equivalent to being 10 years younger and its much nicer that sitting in your car!
If you have a fair distance to travel letting the train or bus take the strain out of traveling can make your day easier. Think of the reduction to your stress levels if that hour spent each day traveling to work could be spent reading on a bus or a train or taking in the beautiful countryside instead of being stuck in a traffic jam.
It is estimated that the actual cost of using your car accounting for fuel and wear and tear is approximately 23p per mile so using public transport can prove cheaper in the long run plus you wont need to worry about parking.
If public transport isn’t an option then car sharing is a really effective way to reduce the number of cars on the road whilst not losing any of the convenience that cars bring. According to the National Statistics Office, if every person who regularly drives to work on their own were to get a lift with someone else just once a week instead, the number of car journeys would be reduced by 12% - 15%!
A modern more environmentally friendly alternative to the petrol fuelled car is an electric car. There are currently two types available; battery cell and hybrid. Hybrid vehicles are a combination of petrol and electric. Battery cell cars are powered by simply plugging into any electrical mains outlet. This type of transport only costs 1p per mile!
Battery cell cars are currently the most commercially popular type of electric car and are the most environmentally friendly vehicle fuel, as they have absolutely no emissions. They are a relative newcomer to the market but hopefully in years to come there will be many more electric cars on our roads. For more information on Electric Vehicles visit EV UK. Electric vehicles are available in Cornwall to hire or as a car pool resource from Cornish company Eco-Drive.
