Reduce

  • Use stylish reusable bags to carry shopping.
  • Stop junk mail by registering with the Mailing Preference Service
  • To stop unaddressed, unsolicited marketing mail contact the Direct Marketing Association (UK) Ltd
  • To stop unsolicited, unaddressed mail (addressed to occupier and householder etc) being delivered by the Royal Mail, you can email: mediacentre.customer.service@royalmail.co.uk
  • Return your bottles
Some bottles are returnable – if you take them back to where you bought them from you’ll often get money back.
  • Bag for life
Instead of taking several new bags from the check-out every time you go to the supermarket, why not get a ‘Bag for Life’ that you can take with you every time you go. Or, you could pack your shopping into a cardboard box.
  • Compost
Many people have a home compost bin. Home composting provides you with a good way to reduce the amount of organic rubbish you throw away and can provide nutrition for your garden. So it’s not only good for the environment, your roses will thank you for it too!

  • Riches to Rags
For the items of clothing that aren’t in good enough condition to take to your charity shop, there are hundreds of other uses. Old T-shirts are always useful for car washing or cleaning your windows; and old sheets and towels make great dust sheets.
  • Borrow books, CDs and DVDs from your local library, instead of buying them.
  • Choose products with less packaging or packaging that can be recycled or reused.
  • When shopping, buying in bulk could reduce packaging waste.
